Procession of the Mahasangha to open the Great Ordination Ceremony (bringing the Pratimoksa precepts into the Precept Boundary)

A special week of formal ceremonies to transmit precepts (ie. the “Mindfulness Trainings” and monastic code) to monks, nuns, lay men and lay women. The usual Plum Village daily schedule is replaced with a special program where the whole community comes together every day from morning until late afternoon for ceremonies in the main Dharma Halls.

Unusual Daily Program

These beautiful ceremonies, which take place only every year or two, involve sitting meditation, chanting, and dharma teaching. Please note that during this week there is no program of formal sitting meditation, formal meals, walking meditation or dharma discussion in addition to the ceremonies. There are, however, many informal opportunities to deepen mindfulness practice amidst the strong collective energy of concentration and in the beautiful supportive environment of Plum Village.

Transmission Ceremonies of the Mindfulness Trainings

This week offers anyone who is present the opportunity to receive the Five Mindfulness Trainings directly from Thich Nhat Hanh himself, as well as many guest Venerable monks and nuns who travel over from Vietnam to offer their spiritual support. It is also a chance for those who have been  trained by a mentor to receive the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings of the Order of Interbeing. The high point of the week is the Great Precepts Transmission day where young monks and nuns receive full ordination into the community of Bhikshu and Bhikshunis respectively.

Transmissions of the Dharma Lamp

The second half of the week is a kind of “Dharma Festival” during which Thich Nhat Hanh ordains new Dharma Teachers, both lay and monastic, in ceremonies of “Transmission of the Lamp“. These ceremonies are beautiful and profound involving an exchange of poetry and intimate guidance given by Thich Nhat Hanh to his disciples as they become a Dharma Teacher in the Plum Village Tradition.

Language: most ceremonies are in Vietnamese with English translation via headphones. The transmission of the 5 and 14 Mindfulness Trainings, and Lamp Transmissions to Western candidates are usually in English or French.
