Retreats offer an opportunity for us to take a break from our lives, and spend time with a group of people practising mindful living. Taking time out from our daily routine and allowing ourselves the space to stop and reflect, can be extremely beneficial and transformative.
A retreat is not the same as a course – the emphasis is on the experience as a whole, rather than on learning techniques or absorbing information. We live together for a few days within a schedule designed to help us be more mindful in everything we do, whether that is washing dishes, chopping vegetables, setting up the meditation hall, or participating in activities such as sitting or walking meditation (for further details see Basic Practice).
Interestingly, a recent peer-reviewed study showed ‘informal’ mindfulness practice (e.g. mindful eating and awareness) to have higher effect upon reduction of stress, anxiety and depression than more ‘formal’ practice (e.g. Deep Relaxation and Sitting Meditation).
All retreats are facilitated by resident facilitators, supported on some retreats by visiting facilitators when mentioned in the retreat description.
