Dharma Talks / Reverence for Life and Generosity

Br Pháp Lai

The three month retreat is drawing to an end, and many retreatants have been able to experience community living in Plum Village. In community living we learn many things such as living in harmony, loving speech, letting go of preferences, non-judgement and to see the suffering of another. Living together is a practice in itself. A Sangha is like a hall of mirrors and helps to reflect what is going on in ourselves. We also have a sangha within ourselves and we have to learn to harmonize the different voices inside of us.

Br Phap Lai also teaches on the 11th, 12th and 13th Mindfulness training of the Order of Interbeing, which are Right Livelihood, Reverence for Life and Generosity. Together they move us in the direction of compassionate action. Compassionate action starts with having compassion for and acceptance of ourselves and then is extended to others. Compassionate action is inclusive and helps both the one being harmed and the one causing harm. All actions have a ripple effect and even when the situation seems hopeless, we have to act from a place of love and trust in the love.

Brother Phap Lai discusses the latest reports on climate change and the importance to have reverence and respect for Mother Earth. He encourages everyone to move towards a plant based diet, to take individual, local and regional action to reduce our carbon footprint. Even in urgent circumstances, we have to remember above all, to always act from a place of compassion and peace.
