Wake Up Earth 2018 08 12 | Understanding Our Mind | by Sr. Lang NghiemBuddhism offers a model to understand our mind that is simple and effective in transforming our suffering. Each person is made up of 5 aggregates – form is our physical body, feelings or emotions, mental formations, perceptions and consciousness. Our mind is basically comprised of the five consciousnesses linked to our 5 senses, our mind consciousness and our store consciousness. All our feelings and mental formations are like seeds in our store consciousness. The activities of our mind is based on the principle of neural plasticity in our seed potential. That is, we can choose not to reinforce neural pathways of feelings and reactions that bring about ill-being. The practice of mere recognition can help to rewire our consciousness. We can selectively water the seeds of well-being when we recognize moments of peace and happiness to strengthen their seed potential in store consciousness. We can learn about the Four Nutriments (edible food, sensory impression, volition and consciousness) in order to selectively consume the things that will protect our body and preserve the integrity and well-being of our mind.
