Original Fear and Original Desire

Two sisters from Plum Village come to Vriendenhuis Nooitgedacht to lead this retreat, to practice stopping with us and look deeply into our Original Fear and Original Desire.
Original Fear and Original Desire is our human condition. We are afraid to not get something and we have a desire for that something. We are afraid that we are not loved and we deeply desire love. When our desire is fulfilled we are afraid to lose it.
Sr. Thang Nghiem writes the following about this:
“Even when we are full of joy, there is fear of this joy. We are afraid that the joyful moment will pass, that we will not get what we need, that we will lose what we love, or that we are not safe.”
Our teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, teaches us that the only way to reduce anxiety and to be truly happy is to acknowledge it and to look at its origins. Instead of wanting to escape the fear, we can invite her into our awareness and look at it deeply and clearly. If we can relax in our strong emotions, we do not pass on fear to our children and the generations after us.
