The “vehicle” is a symbol for oneself, and in the retreat there are five main letters and one auxiliary letter to practice with:

  1. Letter P (or self)
  2. Letter B (Buddha)
  3. Letter T (teacher)
  4. Letter CH (father)
  5. Letter M (mother)
  6. Letter H (happiness)

From there, it develops into the CCB software – child entrusts self to Buddha – inspired by the verse “the tree entrusts itself to the earth, the earth entrusts itself to the tree.” While sitting meditation, we practice inviting the Buddha to breathe with our lungs, to sit with our spine, and then add H to feel happiness permeate our body. The immediate result is dharma joy: when we see the Buddha breathing lightly, we also breathe lightly; when the Buddha sits firmly, we also become stable.

The three Dharma seals (triple marks of the Dharma) are also applied through these “software”:

  1. Non-self – seeing the nature of interbeing, breaking down the barriers of separation
  2. Impermanence – embracing the flow of each moment, letting go of grasping
  3. Nirvana – approaching the nature of the unborn and undying, neither coming nor going

CCB is one of the profound methods of taking refuge, helping to break down the barriers between ourselves and the Buddha, ourselves and our parents, ourselves and our teacher, and ultimately to see deeply into non-self, impermanence, and Nirvana, bringing joy and spaciousness into each breath, each step.
