Basic Buddhist Teachings 25 - The Three Jewels
During the Basic Dharma Retreat at Upper Hamlet on February 17, 1994, Thich Nhat Hanh emphasized applying the Dharma in daily life and reflecting oneself through the Sangha’s mirror. He taught that faith in the Dharma and the Buddha is key, and that a deep understanding of the historical and ultimate dimensions helps one touch the ultimate dimension without leaving the historical one. He also discussed bowing to remember the ancestors and the country, and that taking care of the Sangha is taking care of the Buddha. Faith must be based on real experience, and the true Dharma body contains the true teachings. He warned that faith is dangerous if based on imagination and that the true Dharma body always exists even if the physical body disappears. He emphasized that caring for others in the spirit of mindfulness is caring for the Buddha, and that every daily action is a Sangha activity if it contains the spirit of the True Dharma. He concluded that understanding the interbeing teachings of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha helps overcome all difficulties and attain deep peace.
