Basic Dharma (Spring) 22 – No Seeking – No Production – No Attainment
Non-greed is the absence of endless craving, it is compassion that offers joy to others;
Non-hatred is the absence of anger, without the energy of revenge;
Non-delusion (non-ignorance) is the absence of misunderstanding, the absence of the darkness of ignorance, and the presence of the light of wisdom.
These three wholesome mental formations correspond to the three basic afflictions—greed, hatred, and delusion—collectively called the three poisons, the root of suffering, which need to be purified and transformed in order to rediscover peace.
The Four Noble Truths can be presented positively as suffering, origination, happiness, and path—suffering is present; origination is the cause of suffering; happiness is the joy that arises when suffering is ended; the path is the way that leads to that joy. That path is the Noble Eightfold Path—the path of joy, which includes:
- Right View (the insight of non-delusion)
- Right Thinking
- Right Speech
- Right Action
- Right Livelihood
- Right Diligence
- Right Mindfulness
- Right Concentration
In contrast, the Eightfold Wrong Path—wrong view, wrong thinking, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong diligence, wrong mindfulness, wrong concentration—leads to the extinction of joy, the loss of happiness. Practicing non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion together with the Noble Eightfold Path helps us to transform the three poisons, to nourish true peace and freedom in our daily life.
