Building a Future for Humanity - The Sutra of Auspiciousness
After emerging from a severe bout of dizziness that lasted an entire week during the power outage, each leisurely step becomes a profound happiness, reminding us to cherish our breath and the present moment.
The thirteenth gatha teaches us always to aspire to let go of craving, anger, and ignorance; when these mental states arise, we need to “awaken” – to recognize them clearly – in order to establish right view, that is, to see clearly the path of the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Craving, anger, and ignorance are likened to the three psychological poisons, similar to chemical toxins that pollute the climate; if we wish to protect the world, we must transform our inner landscape through mindfulness, concentration, insight, compassion, loving-kindness, joy, and equanimity. For example: using insight and compassion to extinguish the flames of anger, just as Avalokiteshvara sprinkles the “water of compassion” to cool the “heat of afflictions.”
Applied Buddhism is brought into daily life through retreats for businesspeople, police officers, teachers… and through books such as The Art of Power or Anger. The essence is to practice the Noble Eightfold Path and the Threefold Training (mindfulness–concentration–insight), to give rise to great loving-kindness – a vast love paired with wisdom – and to “cultivate the roots” to build the human being, laying the foundation for collective peace and happiness.
