Clear Determination, Transforming Sexual Energy
-
In the decision-making process of the Sangha, one should not say “as the Sangha wishes,” but must choose either yes or no. If you are not clear or still uncertain, you should:
- Consult with trusted elder brothers and sisters in the Dharma.
- Ask the teacher in order to rely on his wisdom.
- When you see that the majority of trustworthy people have chosen a certain way, you may follow accordingly.
-
Sexual energy is natural, like hunger or thirst; it is not something to be ashamed of. Monastics maintain celibacy in order to have the freedom to fulfill the Bodhisattva aspiration.
- In women: at birth there are 40,000–300,000 ovarian follicles, but in a lifetime only about 500 mature, and 5–10 may become children. Mature eggs are released through the Fallopian tube, meet sperm, and then implant in the uterus.
-
In men: the testicles produce sperm and testosterone; when stimulated, blood flows to cause an erection, and only then is release normal.
It is important to understand that the hypothalamus governs the chain of hormone secretion (estrogen, testosterone), and to know that the eyes, ears, images, and sounds can stimulate sexual desire.
-
Manage this energy by:
• Applying “appropriate attention” to direct the mind along the path of liberation.
• Embracing and soothing the body when feeling a surge of heat.
• Relying on the Sangha—living in a room with three people, not alone—for support whenever difficulties arise.
• Maintaining proper conduct, avoiding private interactions with the opposite sex in secluded places.
• Eating one main meal a day, just enough and chewing thoroughly, combining walking meditation and mindful work to maintain a healthy body and harmonize sexual energy.
