Freedom in a Single Breath: Mindful Practices with Thich Nhat Hanh
In this talk, Thay shares with us the practice of mindful breathing, listening to the bell, and mindful walking. “In Plum Village when we hear the sound of the bell, we stop. We stop what we are thinking, doing, or saying. The sound of the bell is the voice of the Buddha. We have to listen to the voice of the Buddha within ourselves. We only need one, two, or three seconds to become a free person, free from the regrets and sorrows of the past and the worries and anxiety concerning the future. Freedom is possible with one in-breath. That is called mindful breathing. Mindful breathing can generate the energy of freedom. Happiness is not possible without freedom. One in-breath is enough to set us free.”
Understanding suffering and listening to the chant. Invoking the name of Avalokiteshvara. The energy of compassion. How do we use the bell to practice mindfulness? No talking and no thinking and we go back to our breathing. The bell is the voice of the Buddha. The voice of the Buddha inside. One in-breath is enough to be free. One mindful breath. The bell is here to help call us back to our true home.
Walking meditation is another foundational meditation practice. Every step is there to help you arrive in the here and the now. How can we walk on Mother Earth? Using a gatha to help us focus our concentration on walking.
This is the first Dharma talk of the second week of the Summer Opening Retreat, held in Dharma Cloud Temple of Plum Village in the Dordogne, France, on Monday, the 15th of July, 2013.
