Living Peacefully, Happiness from Within
The remaining 15 days are very precious: “Dwelling is to be at ease in the present moment; if the mind wanders elsewhere, then these days might as well not exist.” Sitting in meditation with brothers and sisters in the morning is a rare and fortunate opportunity, so “sit with happiness, enjoy each moment in the present, that is mindfulness.”
The practice of “returning to take refuge in the island within” combines the Three Jewels in each breath and in this very body:
- mindfulness is the Buddha shining light
- the breath is the Dharma protecting body and mind
- the five skandhas are the Sangha diligently working together
In the Sangha, there are many projects to nourish the spiritual family:
– two books, “How to Be a Good Big Brother” and “How to Be a Good Big Sister” – the art of being a big brother or big sister.
– the role of a big sister/mother with “true love, not just out of duty,” building trust in the younger sisters so that “teaching and helping become easier.”
– keeping the schedule, eating in silence, and practicing the precepts as simple yet essential ways to nourish and protect the Sangha.
