Effortless concentration arises when we touch the deep seed in our store consciousness—our deepest desire, the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta). When that seed is nourished, concentration flows without effort, even during everyday activities. Thay identifies five mental concomitants essential to practice:

  1. desire 欲 (chanda)
  2. determination 勝解 (adhimokṣa)
  3. mindfulness 念 (smṛti)
  4. concentration 定 (samādhi)
  5. understanding 慧 (prajñā)
Mind consciousness is the gardener and store consciousness the garden: the task is to bury the kōan or seed deeply so that 24-hour mindfulness naturally nourishes the “baby” within.

Walking meditation becomes a fragrant practice when each of us acts as a bell of mindfulness for the Sangha. Placing a sticker on our shoes reading “I walk for you,” we support one another’s presence in every step. Finally, Thay guides a traditional water-blessing liturgy invoking Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara’s compassion, transforming water into the nectar of purification. Sprinkled on our feet, this water turns the very land we walk upon into a pure land of collective mindful presence.
