Manifestation Only 23 - Loving kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity
The method of interbeing is drawn from the very heart of the teaching of dependent origination – “one phenomenon contains all phenomena.” To practice interbeing means to contemplate each Dharma concept (impermanence, non-self, the Noble Eightfold Path…) as one in all, so that we do not get lost and can grasp the essence: “one in all, all in one.”
The Four Immeasurable Minds, according to the method of interbeing, are four aspects of one reality, born of conditions:
- Loving kindness (maitrī) – the capacity to offer happiness
- Compassion (karuṇā) – the capacity to transform suffering
- Joy (mudita) – altruistic joy, the joy that arises from seeing others happy
- Equanimity (upekkhā) – a mind of non-discrimination, equanimity, not caught, letting go of views
Applying interbeing in study, practice, and teaching helps us to deeply understand the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, the Five Mindfulness Trainings, the Six Paramitas, the Noble Eightfold Path… so that each teaching becomes a path of practice and transmission, bringing peace, clarity, and freedom from error.
