In 2010 at Phuong Khe Monastery, during the preparations for Tet, Thay spoke about the Quaker group (also known as Friends), meaning those who are “moved” in their hearts, who sit in stillness to attain a deep peace similar to Zen. When sitting, the Quakers do not apply techniques to regulate the body, breath, or mind, yet they still create a tranquil space; if someone feels inspired, they share as if God is speaking through them. The practice at the Monastery consists of three main steps:

  • regulating the body: sitting upright but not rigid, relaxed so that you can sit for a long time without fatigue
  • regulating the breath: harmonizing with gentle breathing, helping the body to be more at ease
  • regulating the mind: recognizing and embracing restlessness and unease so that the mind can be at peace
These three support each other, and when many people sit together, the energy of peace spreads throughout the space.

When each individual radiates peace, the collective energy becomes a great strength; even someone new, just hearing the sound of the bell, can feel it deeply. At Plum Village, many young Vietnamese come seeking four precious things:

  1. to live authentically with each other, able to express feelings without fear of judgment
  2. true brotherhood and sisterhood in working together
  3. organizing meaningful activities, helping young people to transform after just a few days of practice
  4. a wholesome environment, free from drugs and alcohol
and the fifth is peace and joy in every step (quoted from Peace and joy at every step). In just a few years, more than 500 young people have aspired to ordain, creating hope for the future of the Bat Nha Sangha. Even though the monastery was attacked, the seeds of insight and happiness remain in each person’s heart; when three, four, or five people come together, the lotus of Bat Nha will bloom and continue to spread.
