Brown rice at Plum Village is favored because, although it takes a long time to cook, when chewed thoroughly it becomes sweet, thanks to the bran which is rich in vitamin B1 and fiber. When brown rice is milled, we obtain:
- White rice
- Bran

During the Rains Retreat in Kosambi, the Sangha had only a handful of bran to live on, offered by a horse merchant, and Venerable Ananda toasted the bran to offer to the Buddha. In 1968, during the Peace Delegation in Paris, I and ten resident brothers and sisters lived simply: sleeping in sleeping bags, eating broken rice bought from the graineterie (a shop selling bird food), working for nearly 9,000 orphans and advocating for peace.
A historical folktale tells of Lê Thị Tấm—a mulberry leaf picker and silkworm raiser in Thổ Lỗi—who was chosen by King Lý Thánh Tông to be his primary consort, given the title Lady Ý Lan. She proposed:
- Ransoming freedom for enslaved children

Punishing and educating buffalo-thief gangs
applying the Buddha’s teachings to reduce the suffering of the people. The people praised her as the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara; she continued to invite the monastics to teach the Dharma, laid the foundation for spiritual justice in the Lý dynasty, and presided over the compilation of the “Collection of Outstanding Figures of the Zen Garden.”
