The Living Tradition of Buddhism – The Plum Village Dharma Doors of Practice
Touching deeply the earth—touching the Kingdom of God with each step, the Dharma talk begins by inviting the practice of mindfulness through walking meditation: using the energy of awareness to take solid, leisurely steps, transforming the garden of the Earth into the Kingdom of God. The strength of the Sangha helps each step become an offering, together with the practice of stopping (samatha) to “pierce through” the veil of delusion, as in the story of Angulimala: it is we ourselves, not the teacher, who have not yet stopped. The gatha “I have arrived—I am home” is practiced with two in-breath steps—two out-breath steps, bringing the mind back to the present moment and revealing the wondrous Dharma body.
An introduction to Zen Master Vinitaruci—the first to transmit the Indian Dharma to Giao Chau (around 562–582), who met Sengcan and then taught at Phap Van Pagoda (Chua Dau), transmitting the robe and bowl to Phap Hien and guiding nearly 300 disciples. He translated:
- The Elephant Head Sutra (from the Prajnaparamita tradition)
- The Sutra on Differentiated Karmic Retribution (translated by Dharma Intelligence)
- The Dharani Sutra (toward the Esoteric tradition)
Vinitaruci opened a Zen school harmonizing the thought of Prajnaparamita and Esoteric elements, for the first time using the term mind seal—the spiritual imprint that preserves the essence of the Dharma, neither lacking nor in excess, opening up all Dharma doors.
