The Present Moment and the Spirit of the Dharma
This Dharma Talk took place at Phap Van Temple in Upper Hamlet of Mai Thuan Sangha, focusing on looking deeply into oneself and living in the present moment. Four days before Vesak, everyone learned about the Three Doors of Liberation: Emptiness, Signlessness, and Aimlessness. The Buddha is not just a historical figure but an embodiment of the Awakened One, and Vesak is an opportunity to deeply understand the spirit of the Buddha’s teachings. The World-Honored One is always present in daily life in various forms. When venerating Shakyamuni Buddha, people need to see the World-Honored One right in the present moment instead of being stuck in the past. Elders such as Mahakasyapa, the great wise elder Sariputra, the Vinaya master Upali, and the Dharma teacher Ananda still exist in different forms within the community. On Vesak, the 18th, everyone will practice meditation, drink tea, and listen to a Dharma talk from the World-Honored One. Thich Nhat Hanh emphasizes that understanding and loving are the essence of the Buddha’s teachings, and ordination is to participate in the Buddha’s mission of love. He spoke about the social activities of the Buddhist student group, building community, and helping the poor. He shared about transmitting compassion through social action and recalled the establishment of the School of Youth for Social Service. He stressed that compassion is not just words but actions, and that the World-Honored One is always present within each of us.
