The Seeds Within Us
Plum Village, with more than 23 years of formation, has become a vibrant cultural and social reality in the West, not only limited to Upper Hamlet or Lower Hamlet but spreading throughout the world through books translated into more than 35 languages. Currently, there are about 30–38 sanghas in England (nearly 10 in London), and thousands of sanghas worldwide regularly gather to practice walking meditation, listen to Dharma talks, eat silent meals, and nourish their hearts through the practice of mindfulness and true brotherhood.
To maintain this tradition, it is necessary to build core groups—each consisting of four or five people living in harmony, relying on the precepts and a shared commitment; at the same time, continuously adapting the Dharma doors to the times by learning from neuroscience, the art of drama, folk music, and modern technology. Maintaining true brotherhood is the very guarantee for the future of the sangha and for Plum Village to remain a source of happiness for many generations.
- regularly meet, discuss the present and future, and uphold the precepts
- form groups of 4–5 people as a solid “core,” with multiple core groups supporting each other
- flexibly transform the teachings, embracing science, art, and new technology
- practice non-self, let go of competition, and nurture the collective ideal and joy
