Third Foundation: Cultivating the Seeds of the Mind
Thầy announces his return to Vietnam from January 12 to April 12, 2005, to offer three months of retreat and teachings on mindfulness. The visit is organized into four segments of about four weeks each; you may commit to one or several segments according to your practice of walking, sitting, breathing, and smiling. Registration is made quickly with Brother Pháp Khâm at the Upper Hamlet or Sister Chân Không at the Lower Hamlet.
During the autumn retreat,
- conscious breathing was taught to bring calm and relaxation,
- contemplation of the body and feelings allowed us to embrace emotions, relieve suffering, and generate nourishing joy,
- the management of emotions was deepened through dozens of exercises to recognize, soothe, and transform difficult feelings.
Today, the third foundation of mindfulness is presented:
• the mind and its mental formations (citta-saṃskāra) and its seeds (bīja) buried deep in the store consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna);
• three key practices:
- pure recognition of mental formations at the moment they arise (anger, jealousy, etc.),
- inviting positive seeds (loving kindness, compassion, joy) to manifest,
-
concentration (samādhi) applied to an object of healing: for example, concentration on impermanence, on non-self, on interbeing, or on compassion;
• the ultimate goal: the liberation of the mind from habitual energies and the realization of true happiness.
