War and Peace via God and Buddha Teachings
The Soviet Union proposed a six-point plan in which Iraq had to withdraw from Kuwait within 21 days. President Bush demanded that Iraq withdraw within seven days, leading to war. Thich Nhat Hanh compares Jesus’ teachings on happiness with Buddhist teachings, emphasizing the simplicity and profundity of the original teachings. He notes that suffering is the foundation of happiness and stresses the importance of compassion, understanding, and peace. He warns about the long-term impact of war and the practice of violence on the human soul, while encouraging the practice of loving one’s enemies and peace education. He also reflects on personal responsibility in creating leadership and a peaceful environment, and underscores the necessity of understanding and compassion in all actions.
