The announcement commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Tu Hieu Root Temple affirms two Dharma doors that monastics need to practice solidly: the sound of the mindfulness bell and mindful steps. Each time we hear the bell, we stop all thinking, listen deeply to the sound of the bell with at least three breaths in mindfulness, receiving it as the voice of the Buddha calling us back to mindfulness. In the meditation hall, Buddha hall, or while sitting, whether late at night, in the morning, or in the evening, we practice silence, meditation, mindfulness of the Buddha, and silent activities. Mindful steps are practiced by walking each step in mindfulness, even if only five or seven steps, coordinating the breath with each step, using mindfulness verses, helping us to dwell happily in the present moment, to release and transform sorrow, anger, and worry.

In the past 30 years, at Plum Village and Green Mountain Dharma Center, these two Dharma doors have brought solidity and great confidence to Western practitioners; currently, there are over 500 practice communities around the world. We respectfully invite venerable teachers and abbots to teach and guide so that the entire monastic community may diligently practice from the Lunar New Year of the Ox, 1997, so that “the practice center will become a hundred times more beautiful and harmonious.” On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the temple by the ancestral teacher Nhat Dinh, we wholeheartedly share the merit and aspire to realize and transmit the spirit of freedom, ease, and unburdened mind that our ancestral teacher truly embodied.
