Applied Ethics

190 monastics practicing together at the European Institute of Applied Buddhism generate the powerful energy of the sangha—a precious jewel that cannot be bought or sold. That energy embraces and guides newcomers, helping them to begin the path of true practice. Thay reminds each practitioner to bring home just two simple practices to nourish the Dharma body and the life of insight:

  • One mindful breath
  • One mindful step
In that way, each step enters the Pure Land, each breath touches happiness and brings liberation to living beings.

The Dharma body, the body of ethics, and the life of insight are the foundations of happiness and liberation, requiring daily practice with each breath, each step. Thay suggests implementing “applied ethics” in schools—a program to train teachers to live and teach in the spirit of the sangha—in order to help students:

  1. Release tension and suffering in body and mind
  2. Recognize and embrace strong emotions instead of falling into despair
  3. Listen with compassion and use loving speech
As a result, the classroom becomes an environment of mindfulness practice, bringing brotherhood and joy right into the present moment.
