Arrived, Home – The Footsteps of Nirvana
When practicing walking meditation, with just two very simple gathas: “I have arrived, I have arrived” as you breathe in, and “I am home, I am home” as you breathe out, the energy of mindfulness is generated to help you dwell firmly in the present moment. With that energy, in just three or five consecutive steps, you can step into nirvana, touch happiness, peace, and liberation.
The major sutras introduce distinctive samadhis (concentrations):
- The Shurangama Sutra – the samadhi of resolute action, the powerful stride of a Bodhisattva, without hesitation because the only path has been clearly seen.
-
The Lotus Sutra – harmonizing the two aspects of reality:
• The historical dimension (birth and death, the work of transformation)
• The ultimate dimension (already a Buddha, unborn and undying)
Through the Lotus Samadhi, living both as a wave and as water. - The Avatamsaka Sutra – the Avatamsaka Samadhi, seeing the one containing all, and all manifesting through the one (for example, one lotus blossom with a thousand petals).
Prajñā (Insight, the Mother of all Buddhas) is entirely different from knowledge. Prajñā is understanding that helps break through wrong views and blockages, so that wisdom can refresh the stream of life. In the system of the Six Paramitas:
• Generosity
• Mindfulness trainings
• Patience
• Diligence
• Meditation
all “cross to the other shore” thanks to Prajñā as their essence; faith, mindfulness, concentration, diligence, and insight inter-are and give rise to one another.
