Autumn Retreat - The Recorded Sayings of Linji
Right view is the guiding light that leads the way, helping us not to be seduced by “demons” of delusion. Non-seeking—having no more external goals, no more searching—is the most noble state. When we let go of all calculation, live simply, without ambition or scheming, we are liberated, at ease and free in the present moment.
Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are all created by the mind; names and concepts are only wrappings that bind us—they are not the true ontological ground. Practice is to recognize our own mind clearly, to let go of likes and dislikes, discrimination, so that we can see the reality that is present and live with the wisdom of non-discrimination.
The five heinous karmas (the five grave offenses that lead us to the hell of uninterrupted suffering) are:
- Killing one’s father
- Killing one’s mother
- Killing an Arhat
- Shedding the blood of a Buddha
- Causing division in the Sangha
