Autumn Retreat - The Recorded Sayings of Linji
This talk focuses on Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings on impermanence and the interaction between the body and the environment. He teaches that the physical body, including the spleen, stomach, liver, gallbladder, hair, body hair, teeth, and nails, is impermanent and dependent on earth, water, wind, and fire. He compares the heart to the sun and the lungs to the forest, emphasizing that the body exists both inside and outside. He speaks about the four domains of body, feelings, mind, and objects of mind, and that everything contains everything else. He warns against delusive thoughts that lead to suffering and that mindfulness is the key to liberation. He emphasizes that everything is interdependent and that looking deeply into oneself helps achieve a state of non-thinking. He also discusses the four modes of birth: womb, egg, moisture, and transformation, and that the state of mind determines the living conditions. He encourages the practice of mindfulness and meditation to achieve joy and happiness in the Dharma, avoiding mental illnesses. He concludes by emphasizing that everyone has the ability to shine and that mindfulness is the source of enlightenment energy.
