Details of this Dharma Talk include learning about the Five Precepts during the autumn retreat at Phap Van Monastery, Plum Village, belonging to the 43rd generation of the Linji School. Patriarch Nhat Dinh, born in 1787, received a 20-character transmission gatha from Venerable Pho Tinh at the age of 30. He guided practice at Bao Quoc Monastery and was appointed by the king to be the head monk of Giac Hoang Monastery in 1839. He established a hermitage on Duong Xuan Mountain instead of building a royal temple, where his two disciples, Prince Tung Thien and Prince Tuy Ly, came to visit. Thich Nhat Hanh shares the story of Patriarch Nhat Dinh’s filial piety and the construction of Tu Hieu Temple. He explains about the Dharma body, the reward body, and the transformation body, emphasizing the teachings of aimlessness and interbeing. He warns against chasing after material things and emphasizes that peace lies within each person’s heart. He also shares about discovering one’s true self and being mindful of negative thoughts, stressing that all precious things lie within each person.
