Autumn Retreat - The Recorded Sayings of Linji

Four types of relationships between “guest” (student) and “host” (spiritual friend) – called the Four Guest-Host Relationships:
- Host is host – guest is guest (ordinary relationship)
- Guest challenges host (the student shines light on the teacher)
- Host challenges guest (the teacher “brings down” the student)
- Flexible – host and guest can switch roles

The four steps “Looking, Listening, Questioning, and Prescribing” in diagnosis and therapy:
- Looking: observing the outer appearance
- Listening: listening to the story
- Questioning: asking probing questions
- Prescribing: designing a way of responding – therapy
