Believing that “the seeds of insight, liberation, and happiness are already present in our mind,” there is no need to run around searching for this teacher or that teacher; “I have arrived, I am home, I have stopped running” encourages us to return to rely on our inner self and to practice self-healing instead of creating long-term dependence on a therapist.

  1. Four types of relationships between “guest” (student) and “host” (spiritual friend) – called the Four Guest-Host Relationships:
    1. Host is host – guest is guest (ordinary relationship)
    2. Guest challenges host (the student shines light on the teacher)
    3. Host challenges guest (the teacher “brings down” the student)
    4. Flexible – host and guest can switch roles
  2. The four steps “Looking, Listening, Questioning, and Prescribing” in diagnosis and therapy:

    2. Listening: listening to the story
    3. Questioning: asking probing questions
    4. Prescribing: designing a way of responding – therapy
