Basic Practice Sutra 1
The details of this talk revolve around the Winter Retreat at Phuong Khe Monastery, where people study the Attapada Sutra, Sutra number 198 in the New Great Canon. The ancient language from the third century makes the text profound and difficult to understand without diligent effort. In the first 400 years, knowledge was orally transmitted from teacher to student, and later written down on palm leaves. Thich Nhat Hanh emphasizes the preservation of Pali scriptures in the Sutta Nipata, encouraging reading from verse 915 to 934, a total of 20 verses. He shares about the tradition of non-violence and compassion of the Jain sect, recounting the care of injured birds. He also talks about the disappearance of Buddhism in India and the efforts to bring it back. He stresses the importance of letting go of fame to achieve enlightenment, being wary of sensual desires, and encourages everyone to recognize their own potential. He tells the story of Tran Thu Do and Tran Lieu to illustrate humanity and solidarity. He concludes by focusing on mindfulness and letting go of all desires to attain enlightenment.
