Basic Practice Sutra 2
“Do not use your own limited views, do not fall into the three complexes…” teaches us not to see ourselves in three ways, which are the three ancient psychological complexes we need to overcome:
- The superiority complex (thinking we are better than others)
- The inferiority complex (thinking we are less than others)
- The equality complex (thinking we are the same as others)
These three complexes arise from comparing self and non-self, causing suffering just like the five fingers: only when we realize the non-self nature of each finger and live in harmony like the five fingers, can the hand function smoothly. The insight of non-discrimination (non-self) helps us let go of comparison and brings peace.
In monastic life, whether we are praised or bowed to, we must always contemplate that the respect is offered to the Three Jewels, not to our individual self. Maintain a humble heart, follow your breathing to avoid arrogance, protect your virtue, and sustain peace in your practice.
