Being Present for Life
The details of this talk took place at Deer Park Monastery during the Opening the Heart retreat. Thich Nhat Hanh emphasized the importance of love and opening the heart, avoiding suicidal thoughts, and handling strong emotions such as anger and despair. He encouraged the practice of mindful breathing to overcome emotional storms and to teach this skill to teachers and parents to help children overcome negative emotions. He also stressed the importance of conveying ethics without religious coloring and applying ethics in education. He warned about the consumption of meat and animal products causing suffering to animals and the environment, encouraging at least 10-15 days of vegetarianism each month to save the planet. He emphasized that consuming toxic information from the media can have serious consequences and encouraged conveying messages with understanding and compassion. He also spoke about understanding and accepting suffering to achieve happiness, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all life and the ability to transform negative karma through Mindfulness, Concentration, Insight, and Loving-Kindness. He concluded with an encouragement to maintain long-term practice and enhance the quality of life.
