Birth and Death in Every Moment

*The Asian Institute of Applied Buddhism at Lien Tri Temple, Hong Kong, began with about 30 monastics (with a projected 125 in the future, one third of whom will be from Hong Kong), aiming to build a strong Sangha together with lay friends, especially young people. There is already the European Institute of Applied Buddhism in Germany with 56 monastics and many lay friends; next month, two large retreats will take place (one for Germans, one for Dutch) with more than 200 brothers and sisters caring for each practitioner.

*The training program is not only for monastics but also for teachers and parents, with the aim of bringing “ethics class” into elementary and secondary schools and equipping skills:

  1. Releasing tension through mindfulness (breathing, walking, lying down).
  2. Recognizing and transforming suffering in body and mind.
  3. Deep listening (with a compassionate heart, loving speech) to heal suffering.
  4. Cultivating joy and happiness in each moment (mindfulness, concentration).

*The teaching of the Middle Way—“this is, because that is”—is illustrated through the relationship of interbeing (parent–child, teacher–student, left–right, birth–death): birth and death are happening continuously in every moment, like water vapor becoming a cloud, the cloud transforming into rain, without ever truly disappearing. Thanks to this contemplation, each breath and present moment is an opportunity to live and die in peace, to overcome fear, and to practice applied Buddhism deeply.
