Building the Sangha is Important
Contemplate the Sangha as a forest of trees, each tree standing upright beside the others, creating an atmosphere of solemnity, like stepping into a cathedral with majestic pillars. The energy of sincere and reverent presence, likened to a solemn ceremony, can comfort and transform every heart, as in the case of little Babita, who was held, embraced, and spoken to with words of mindfulness to restore peace. When those who have a clear path, a clear Dharma door, and concentrated mind power stand together, they are like sturdy trees; just their presence is enough to “liberate the world” without needing to do anything more.
The past, with its ghosts of resentment and fear, can prevent us from touching the wonders of the present moment. Therefore, we need reminders—the sound of the bell, the clock, the birds—to help us stay awake and not look at the present with old eyes. The Sangha is not just other people who are strangers, but is the very collective body of each one of us; when our mind still sees ourselves as a separate individual, we have to suffer, but when we understand that the Sangha is ourselves, all fear and inferiority dissolve.
We can contribute to the Sangha in many ways, such as:
- Sharing our insight, offering suggestions for harmony and benefit to the community during Dharma discussions, meetings, or intimate conversations
- Using our unique talents—teaching chanting, baking, organizing retreats, supporting registration, operating computers—so that the Sangha can function smoothly and develop
- Practicing mindfulness in each step, each breath, each smile to nourish and protect the Sangha, bringing solidity, peace, and collective happiness
