The group of teacher and students traveled throughout China, from the Phap Nguyen Buddhist College (Beijing) to Bach Lam Temple (Master Zhaozhou), Bich Son (Wutai Mountain), Vien Minh Great Lecture Hall (Shanghai), Linh An (Hangzhou), and Fuzhou. At each place, Thay was warmly welcomed, chanting the Heart Sutra in English for the venerable monks to hear, then giving Dharma talks in the Great Hero Hall, the guest hall, or even in the middle of the marketplace. The recurring theme was “I have arrived, I am home” – dwelling happily in the present moment, dwelling happily in the here and now – helping everyone to taste the fragrant fruit of freedom and deep relaxation.

The main content included:

  1. I have arrived, I am home: returning to the present moment, solid as a green mountain, free as a white cloud.
  2. Walking meditation: each step in awareness of the breath, breathing in to lift the foot, breathing out to bring body and mind back to the here and now.
  3. Five-stage prostration practice: touching the sources of our blood, spiritual, and land ancestors; offering happiness to loved ones and even to those who have caused us suffering.
  4. Emphasizing daily happiness in the practice, transforming suffering through mindfulness.
  5. Chanting the Heart Sutra (in English), answering hundreds of practical questions from monastics and lay friends.
