Dharma Discussion with Thay
On September 18, 1991, at Plum Village Monastery, Thay shared about the difference between practice and enlightenment, emphasizing that practice helps to understand life better rather than avoiding it. Thay explained that mindfulness helps control behavior and liberate from negative thoughts, especially in giving up smoking or alcohol. Thay mentioned the 14th precept related to preserving sexual energy and the mystical system of Taoism. He explained that maintaining sexual moderation helps conserve spiritual energy, avoid feelings of guilt, and focus on higher goals. He emphasized that love and caring for the other person well help overcome sexual needs. In Buddhism, enlightenment is related to understanding oneself and society, not just a personal experience. Consciousness includes 8 aspects, including intuition and distinguishing good from evil. The 8th consciousness is the garden and the 7th is the gardener, needing each other to achieve enlightenment. Thay concluded that everything is deeply interconnected, helping to overcome fear and gain a clearer perception of reality.
