Dharma Talk Summer 94
Thầy encourages us to seek refuge in the Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. We can develop strong mindfulness to be an island unto ourselves, following the advice of the Buddha in many of his last teachings. Thầy shows how mindfulness promotes happiness, freedom and harmony through understanding our relationships with the five skandhas of body, feeling, perception, mental formation, and consciousness. Following a presentation of Telephone Meditation by young people, Thầy investigates right speech. He shows how speaking of the Buddha Dharma and telling the truth are not enough to ensure right speech. The power of silent practice can help us to quiet our thinking and identify our habit energies, understanding the deep pressures that fuel them. Mindful practice of loving speech and deep listening will result in skillful action.
This is the tenth talk in a series of seventeen given during the Summer Opening retreats in the year 1994. Thầy offered this talk at the Upper Hamlet, Plum Village, France.
