January 1, 1991 The Institute of Buddhist Higher Studies inaugurated its final training course for young people to practice and study, with the following program:

  • Basic Buddhism in English taught by Sister Chan Khong, and Classical Chinese Sutras taught by Sister Chan Quang, including English and Sino-Vietnamese pronunciation to support the study of Mandarin
  • The ciné permanent model—a continuous film screening room with video lectures and tapes, played in an unending circle, helping students to practice gently and deeply
  • A four-year course, where those entering late in the third year still join the same class, and in the fourth year, returning to the first year will allow for deeper understanding thanks to the existing foundation; students are encouraged to stay on to listen further or to work at Plum Village

The Basic Buddhism program includes:

  1. The Three Jewels 2. The Body 3. The Four Foundations of Mindfulness 4. The Noble Eightfold Path 5. The Five Faculties 6. The Seven Factors of Awakening 7. Many other basic Dharma doors
The teachings must be transmitted through the teacher’s own experience and practice, not just by replaying recorded tapes. Currently, the teacher has taught Tripitaka 1, is teaching Tripitaka 2, and next year will teach Tripitaka 3 with examples from Vietnamese and American Buddhism.

Plum Village encourages the use of every individual’s talents to serve the Dharma, for example:

  • Talents in medicine, architecture, chemistry, music, translation (English, French, German)
  • Experience as a nurse in caring for the body and nursing the soul
  • Experiences of war, imprisonment, drugs… all become precious resources to help teach and practice mindfulness and compassion
The method of study is to make use of each person’s resources to spread the Dharma doors, such as the Duy Thuc (Consciousness-Only) course which has been recorded to improve quality, accompanied by Pure Land materials and Buddhist poetry, to help students review on their own, guide newcomers, and resonate together in Dharma discussions.
