At the memorial ceremony for Ancestor Thanh Quy (Chan That), which was transmitted from Plum Village to Tu Hieu Temple, sixteen nationalities of monastics together with 1,200 lay practitioners gathered. The lamp transmission gatha from Venerable Hue Minh to Elder Teacher Thanh Quy was chanted and explained through four main themes:

  1. True suchness manifests from the nature of reality
  2. Deluded consciousness is originally empty
  3. Phenomena are “as if they exist, as if they do not”
  4. The wondrous function of non-seeking is self-accomplished, that is, the freedom and great capacity that comes from deeply understanding the emptiness of suffering.

Thay recalled United Nations Resolution 53/25: the year 2000 was the International Year for a Culture of Peace, and the period 2001–2010 was the Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World, sponsored by UNESCO. The Manifesto 2000 consists of six points, which go hand in hand with the Five Mindfulness Trainings of Buddhism:

  1. Respect life in all its forms
  2. Reject violence in all its forms
  3. Cultivate loving-kindness and share with those in need
  4. Listen deeply, protect freedom of expression and cultural diversity
  5. Practice responsible consumption, protect the environment
  6. Build community and Sangha on the basis of democracy.
There are already 3 million signatures, with a goal of 100 million to be presented to the United Nations.
