Diligent Practice: The Lotus with a Thousand Petals – Discourse on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness 05
The practice of mindful breathing, if developed and practiced continuously, will bring great fruit by realizing the four foundations of mindfulness:
- Contemplation of the body in the body – entering deeply into the object of meditation, being a participant and not merely an observer, to feel the whole body while breathing.
- Contemplation of feelings in feelings – observing the quality of pleasant, unpleasant, neutral, or calming feelings through the breath.
- Contemplation of mind in mind – recognizing mental states, collecting or liberating the mind.
- Contemplation of objects of mind in objects of mind – contemplating impermanence, non-attachment, non-birth and non-death, letting go… with each breath in order to see reality (objects of mind) as it is.
When the practitioner abides steadily in the four establishments of mindfulness, the seven factors of enlightenment will arise and develop one after another, leading to complete wisdom and liberation:
- Mindfulness
- Investigation of dharmas (discernment)
- Diligence (effort)
- Joy in the practice
- Tranquillity
- Concentration
- Equanimity
