Don't Be a Drop of Oil in Water
Details of this Dharma Talk took place on November 23, 2000, at Cam Lo Meditation Hall, Lower Hamlet, marking the beginning of the 2000 Winter Retreat. Thich Nhat Hanh emphasized finding happiness in the present moment through the practice of “dwelling happily in the present moment,” avoiding chasing after the past and the future. He encouraged the daily, hourly practice of mindfulness to experience true happiness. He also discussed enjoying each moment of life, such as mindful eating, savoring each childhood treat, and taking care of each step with mindfulness. He noted that modern society promotes a fast-paced mentality, making the enjoyment of meals and rest less important. He encouraged the community to support each other in their practice, organizing daily life in a way that is happy and relaxed. In the community, decisions should be made by the entire Sangha, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to contribute their opinions. He also emphasized respecting the elderly in community decisions and encouraged everyone to explore their hidden talents to contribute to the collective happiness.
