Every time we hear the sound of the bell, we stop all thinking and return to our breath: “Breathing in, I feel well. Breathing out, I feel light.” Walking meditation is the practice of mindful walking, each step bringing peace instead of haste and hurry. By breathing – stepping – mindfulness:

  1. I have arrived, I have arrived (2–3 steps while breathing in)
  2. I am home, I am home (2–3 steps while breathing out)

Practicing Dwelling Happily in the Present Moment: living happily right in this very moment, not sacrificing the present for the future. Through walking meditation, placing our mind in our steps, letting go of the past and the future, we nourish peace and joy in body and mind, and transform sorrow and suffering.

The four basic elements of mindful walking:

  1. I have arrived, I am home
  2. Now, here
  3. Solidity, freedom
  4. Returning to take refuge in the island within (Attadīpa) – where the qualities of the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, our ancestors, and life itself are present.

Walk like the Buddha: each step leisurely, solid, free, dwelling in the present moment, so that even when our breath is faint, we have no regrets, because we have “walked in happiness” on this wondrous earth.
