Generating the Energy of Compassion in a Retreat

The most precious aspect of the retreat does not lie in the Dharma talk, but in the collective energy of mindfulness and compassion generated when body, speech, and mind are in harmony, especially through the chanting of the name of Avalokitesvara. Each set of three recitations is accompanied by a hand gesture to touch and transform suffering at different levels:

  1. touching the suffering of oneself, one’s family, ancestors, and country;
  2. opening the heart towards those around us to feel their suffering;
  3. reaching the hands forward, then releasing them to embrace the suffering of the whole world (violence, poverty, etc.).

The role of the chant leader is important in keeping the rhythm of the bell after the second recitation, and at the same time serving as a bright example to help cultivate the energy of mindfulness, concentration, and insight for those who are still weak. Praying and reciting the names of those who are suffering does not wait for the completion of the formal ceremony to generate the energy of compassion; the moment the name is heard, the chant leader already gives rise to loving-kindness and shares the benefit with both themselves and the whole community. The healing power also comes from the brotherhood of the Sangha and the true teacher-student relationship that transcends technological means, nourished through the practice of mindfulness, self-care, and loving oneself as a way to care for the Sangha and the teacher.
