Happiness for Young People
Talk from the Upper Hamlet of Plum Village, Thursday, March 13, 2014. After a period of lazy days following the winter retreat, Thich Nhat Hanh offers a teaching in English that begins with chanting and hearing the bell, then a lesson on mindful breathing to release tension and painful emotions. He reads a “Letter to Death Row,” speaking about fear, anger, despair, compassion, and the possibility of freedom in prison.
The teaching continues with the Sutra of the Four Kinds of Nutriments: edible food; sensory impressions from eye, ear, nose, body, and mind; intention/volition as our deepest desire; and consciousness. Thay explains mindful consumption, preserving compassion, and helping young people to suffer less, noting that nothing can survive without food.
In the second half, a ceremony confers an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Hong Kong upon Thich Nhat Hanh. He responds to the degree and engages in a dialogue with the Vice Chancellor on the topic of today’s youth, the need for a good environment created by teachers and parents, and how intention can guide us to work for peace, the environment, and the alleviation of suffering.
