Happiness in Oneself—Happiness in the World
Thầy begins this talk by focusing on mindfulness practices taught through practice poems or gāthās. The first poem, “Waking up this morning, I smile,” invites us to embrace each day with compassion and to recognize the gift of twenty-four brand new hours. Mindfulness transforms ordinary actions into spiritual practices, bridging worldly and spiritual realms.
Mindfulness, concentration, and insight nurture spirituality, akin to divine energies, bringing compassion and healing. Understanding suffering fosters compassion, crucial for peace and happiness. Mindful breathing and walking meditation cultivate immediate peace and joy, emphasizing freedom and happiness in the present moment. Every step, every breath brings peace, happiness and freedom. You don’t need to practice for eight years! True peace and happiness come from within, transcending external desires, and contribute to a peaceful world. Sharing this wisdom daily fosters inner peace and joy.
“There is no way to freedom—freedom is the way. There is no way to happiness—happiness is the way. There is no way to peace—peace is the way. The means and the end, they are the same. That is the principle.”
This talk was offered during a Day of Mindfulness in the spring of 2009. Thầy offered this talk at the New Hamlet, Plum Village, France.
