Homeland on Every Step
Sister Chan Khong presented the song Peaceful Mind by Sister Giải Nghiêm, which demonstrates progress in the theme of walking meditation, similar to the songs Each Peaceful Step by Aunt Tịnh Thủy or the song by Sister Pháp Niệm. The lyrics are sincere, not using many Buddhist terms, reminding us that each step brings us back to our spiritual “homeland”—the place of true peace and happiness. The concept of a mind without desire (no desire, that is peace) is the source of true peace, and peace begins with the inner happiness of each person, spreading to family and community. Lasting joy comes from mindfulness in the present moment, practicing walking and sitting solidly (dwelling happily in the present moment) so that each step is relaxed and at ease.
Suffering becomes the material to nourish the Bodhi mind, helping our practice to mature if we know how to accept and to transform it; maintaining the Bodhi mind—the mind of loving kindness—is the foundation for happiness not only for ourselves but also for our family, friends, and all beings. Buddhist knowledge must be lived in practice, avoiding being caught in mere words; mindfulness protects the six senses so that we are not drowned in form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and objects of mind—the six objects of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. The companionship of fellow practitioners helps us to grow in solidity and happiness on the path of practice.
