How to Sleep Well
The Sutra of One Hundred Parables consists of 100 profound humorous stories featuring the character of “the foolish man,” pointing out that we ourselves are the ones who overlook the foundation and the happiness already available to us:
- The rich man wants to build the third floor right away without making the foundation for the first and second floors—a lesson in patience and mindfulness in practice.
- The thirsty man stands dying by the riverbank but refuses to drink—illustrating how we have the Three Jewels right in our hands, yet still let suffering dominate us.
The practice of liberation, enlightenment, and happiness begins with our body and mind, which are composed of the five skandhas: form, feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness. Through conscious breathing and each mindful step, we nourish our full presence, and only when we are solid within can we offer peace and happiness to others. In building the Sangha,
- Three members are just enough
- Four is very good
- Five is wonderful—that is the solid core to guide the larger community.
