Introduction to Walking Meditation by Thay
Thầy offers brief guidance before leading the Sangha in walking meditation, inviting everyone to walk in such a way that peace and joy are possible in every step.
Breathing in, practitioners are encouraged to take two or three steps while saying silently: “I have arrived.” Breathing out: “I am home.” To arrive in the here and the now, Thầy teaches, is to walk in such a way that this very land becomes the Pure Land, the Kingdom of God—entirely dependent on the quality of our presence. The collective energy of mindfulness generated by the whole Sangha, he notes, will penetrate and support each individual practitioner.
After settling into arrival, practitioners are invited to shift into a second movement: “I am solid. I am free” — free from afflictions and from the habit energy of running. The practice, Thầy reminds us, is simply to stop—to recognise that life is already available in the here and the now.
Sister Chân Không then offers brief guidance for walking harmoniously within the large crowd, noting that even standing still is its own meditation. The second half of the recording follows the Sangha in silent walking meditation.
This introduction was given on a Day of Mindfulness during the US Tour in the year 1997. Thầy offered this talk at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, Woodacre, California, in the United States.
