In Buddhism, love is made of understanding: without looking deeply into another’s needs and suffering, you cannot love. Love is maitrī, the union of willingness and capacity to bring joy. Practicing maitrī relies on meditation—chỉ (calming emotions) and quán (deep insight)—so the water of the heart becomes still and able to reflect the roots of pain inherited through generations.
Maitrī is offered without conditions: a caring gaze, attentive listening, a smile or embrace can bring joy at any moment. True love respects freedom and space, asking nothing in return.
The second aspect of Buddhist love is karuṇā (bi), a compassion that helps others transform their suffering rather than merely sharing it.
