The regions of suffering and violence arise from a sharp dagger hidden within the anguish of human beings; only when we recognize and remove that dagger from our heart can suffering cease and peace appear. The sixth gatha reminds us that, amidst the entanglements of life, we should not let ourselves become caught in any entanglement; we must cut off the roots of delusion (the crooked, unstable, and insecure origins) and let go, not relying on anything unwholesome, so that we may dwell in non-abiding and overcome all afflictions.
We practice transforming suffering through mindfulness with the breath, recognizing and embracing when the mind is greedy, angry, or free from greed and anger; nourishing the contemplation of non-greed and loving kindness in order to extinguish hatred, ambition, and fear. The process from right intention (wise attention), through mindfulness, concentration, and insight, leads to happiness and liberation—this is letting go of afflictions and attaining the path of coolness.
The list of three key steps:
- Recognize and remove the sharp dagger of suffering in the mind
- Let go of entanglements, cut off the roots of delusion, live in non-abiding
- Practice mindfulness of breathing, nurture non-greed and loving kindness for peace and liberation
