Living in Mindfulness with Family and Society
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, Dharma name Trừng Quang, known as Nhất Hạnh, after 60 years of spiritual practice and nearly 40 years away from his homeland, returned to Vietnam from January to April 2005, leading the Plum Village Sangha delegation to visit Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, and Binh Dinh. He established Plum Village in France (1982), Deer Park Monastery and Magnolia Grove Monastery in the United States, with nearly 200 monastics and hundreds of thousands of lay practitioners; each year, retreats are organized attracting practitioners from more than 25 countries; over 100 of his books have been translated into many languages.
He emphasizes the value of the present moment and walking meditation, sitting meditation, eating meditation, tea meditation as simple methods to:
- connect body and mind through conscious breathing
- create conditions for peace and happiness in every step and every breath
- recognize and offer true presence to loved ones, build brotherhood, and help restore communication between spiritual life and daily life
Plum Village and the Mindfulness Practice Centers (in Europe and America) do not take the form of a religion, do not worship the Buddha, do not perform rituals, but focus solely on the practice of mindfulness so that everyone, from Judaism, Christianity to Islam, can come comfortably and rediscover peace in today’s busy life.
